The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus is now accepting auditions for the 2022-2023 Season. Those interested in auditioning should apply for a live audition here.
Who are our general membership singers? What are we looking for?
We are looking for singers who are 18 years of age or older who can contribute to rehearsals and performances in a positive way. We seek singers who understand that performing in a chorus means giving themselves over to the ensemble. Please note that we will not be able to accept everyone who auditions for our general membership. However, we are happy to provide feedback to everyone who auditions.
Requirements for a General Membership Audition
You will notice that this is not your standard type of audition. We do not want to only hear you sing a solo, rather we want to hear all that you would bring to a choral ensemble. A successful chorus is a wonderful mix of strengths, sounds, and spirits, and we want you to be able to share yours with us.
Expect your audition to last about 10 minutes. Music Director Dr. Adam Luebke and an accompanist will be present to guide you through the audition requirements:
My Country Tis of Thee - You will be asked to sing the melody using music that we'll provide at the audition. The panel is listening for vocal color, diction, intonation, and expressive singing. This does not need to be memorized.
Vocalizing - The panel will guide you through warm-ups to listen to your range, vocal color and intonation.
Rhythm Reading - You will receive a 4 measure rhythm upon arrival at the audition space and be asked to perform it for the panel.
Ear Training - The panel will play 4 melodies of 4 to 5 notes and ask you to sing them back.
Sing Bach - Before the audition, learn your part to a Bach chorale in English (score is available here) and sing it. Our pianist will play with you. The panel is listening for vocal color, diction, intonation, and expressive singing. If you have not prepared the Bach Chorale, you will be excused.
